Cedar Planked Salmon

Cedar Planked Salmon is easily prepared indoors in a hot oven or outside on the grill.  The mosquito's are so bad here this year that I opted to do this meal inside using the oven.  It is a fast and delicious meal and that is always a good thing!

Ingredients for Cedar Planked Salmon:

1 fresh side of salmon
2 t. lemon pepper
2 - 3 fresh lemons

Soak a cedar plank in clean fresh tap water for 20-30 minutes before preparing. The ones I use are approx. 6" x14" x 3/4" .  Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. 

Line a half sheet pan with aluminum foil and place the cedar plank across the pan.  Sprinkle the cut side of the salmon with the lemon pepper.  Place the salmon skin side down on the plank and place the foil lined tray with the plank and the salmon in the hot oven and set the timer for 20 minutes.

Check the salmon in the thickest portion by lifting it towards the center with a fork to see if it flakes.  Squeeze the juice of 1 of the lemons across the length of the fillet.  Return to the oven if it needs further roasting.  Check in 5 minute increments as not to over cook. When it flakes remove from the oven and let it rest 10 minutes tented loosely with foil.

Serve with lemon wedges and a side salad.

Note:  We scrub the cedar planks with salt and a brush.  Rinse well and set aside to dry completely.  After drying store until next time.

  1. I have never heard of cooking salmon in this way before. Does the cedar flavour the salmon? or is there some other reason for cooking this way. It sure looks good.

  3. Cedar planked salmon is common here (at least in Indiana where we live.) and is often featured in eateries. It smells wonderful cooking and lends a subtle flavor. I always cook the salmon skin side down and think the plank tends to grip the skin a bit which makes the flesh lift off more easily, or so it seems to me.
