Holiday Sewing! Quick Scarves & Cozy Tied Throws for Starters

Soft and cozy royal blue ribbed knit is outstanding!  So I made two!
A few weeks ago I took a quick inventory of winter knits that might be lovely as scarves.  I wanted some bulky, some silky knit, and all pretty.  My first dive into the first tote netted enough for six cowl or circle or infinity scarves.  I was looking for in the neighborhood of 2 yards by 11 or 22 inches.  Not all the same but in the neighborhood!

Love this soft and silky but with medium heft.
Red, black, and white cable is quite striking as well as so soft!

I REALLY like this very soft and a little bulky number and I made two of this too.

Six scarves lined up and done.

Next I went through the three quilting totes and found three pieces suitable for tied comforter style throws.  I am not sure if I will give them all as gifts or who I might gift them with but I am enjoying getting back to my treasures!

Two velvet and one cotton patchwork topper for a throw.
I plan another fabric dive as soon as I get finished with these pieces!  I also hear throw pillows calling my name. Listen.......do you hear it too?  Ops I had to do it!  Thinking Christmas or New Years Eve sparkling glittering scarves!  Lots to do!

GLITZ GALORE! May go for something festive!
If you want to make one of these scarves (or more).  For each scarf cut fabric 2 yards (72")  by 22 inches.  Fold with right sides facing longways.  Machine stitch 1/2" from the edge the long seam.  Turn right side out.

Fold scarf in half.  Match the raw ends.  Pin right sides facing of the ends and machine stitch leaving a 4" to 6" opening.  Turn the scarf right sides and fold the raw edges of the opening together to close then hand stitch the opening closed.  You are all done!

NOTE:  For complete instructions with photos go to my link as follows..... thehiddenpantry.blogspot.com/2013/01/infinity-scarf-circle-large-double-loop.html
Of course you can plat around with the dimensions too!

Sew a "Glam" Metallic Knit Infinity or Circle Scarf in Under an Hour, Easy Directions with Pictures

Silver Grey Metallic Knit Infinity Scarf Made in Under an Hour.
Somehow time slips away from me and I find myself way behind again in my sewing for gift giving!  There are wedding gifts to be made, another baby gift is on the horizon, and there is a family birthday this weekend.  Not to mention Christmas will be here before you know it!

A pretty box, tissue paper, and a silk ribbon are a good start for gift giving.
I really enjoy making the scarves for gifts and giving them along with a gift card or a little cash!  I look for pretty boxes that can be kept and used to package the gift in too.

Instructions for Making a Metallic Knit Infinity or Circle Scarf:

Beautiful fabrics make beautiful one of a kind scarves.
Metallic Knit lightweight fabric 60" x 14"
matching thread

Press and straighten the fabric.  Fold in half longways with the right sides inside facing each other.   Note:  My fabric wanted to roll a bit and so pressing was most helpful.

Sewing the long seam closed.
Pin the raw long edge together and machine stitch 3/8" from the raw edge.  When sewing lightweight fabrics it is sometimes very helpful to loosen the tension on your sewing machine to prevent puckering.  It is also helpful to use a stitch conducive to knit fabrics so the thread will have a bit of give to it.

I love this part when you turn the scarf!
Turn the scarf right side out.  Next pin the raw edge of each end under 3/8" to form a nice finished edge to the scarf ends.  Pressing may indeed help here too.

With the folds together forming a tube hand stitch to finish.
I like to sew this last part by hand as it really gives the scarf that hand made just for you essence!  So, join the two folded edged together to form the tube and overcast the edges with a small nearly invisible stitch.

This will be so much nicer when worn!
And there you have it a beautiful, original, one of a kind, made with love and care Infinity Scarf to give someone you care for in under an hour!

Infinity Scarf (Circle) Large Double Loop in 2 Widths and Fabrics.

Both fabrics are in the same color family but one is smooth and glistening and the other is ribbed with a shimmer.
This double looped scarf would be lovely to set off any neutral color.

The ribbed texture of this double looped scarf really gives it a different appearance.
The first Infinity (Circle) Scarf I tackled measured  12" by 60" overall to start and turned out very nicely.  See "Sew an Infinity (Circle) Scarf", posted 11/3/12.   It made a single loop.  This time I have been pondering how to enlarge to a double loop.  I had 2 more beautiful pieces of fabric laid out and laundered that are a lightweight knit, both robin egg blue but of different textures.  One is for my sister Linda's birthday and the other will go into a box I have made up of goodies for my best friend Diane.

It seems to me 90" would be a suitable length to form into a circle and then be able to double the loop with enough slack to further knot if desired.  The width of 15" again would be fine but I may do one scarf a bit wider, say 18-19 " just for a change.

Because the fabrics are not 90 inches wide or long and I have determined that is the length I want to start at I am going to use two cuttings and seam them for the overall length.

The first scarf is made of two cuttings 15" x 45".  Sew one 15"  end to the second piece right sides facing with a 7/8" seam using a stitch suitable for knit fabric.  Now you have one piece of fabric 15" x 90".

Fold the fabric in half RIGHT sides facing each other and pin the long edge together.  Mark the fabric 4" from the ends as you will NOT sew here.

Starting 4" from the end sew a 7/8" seam along the long edge on the WRONG side of the fabric.  STOP 4" before you get to the end,  Turn the tube as if it were sock so the RIGHT side of the fabric is now on the outside.  Pin the two remaining 15" ends together, RIGHT sides facing each other then sew a 7/8" seam to close.  After finishing this step all that is left is a 8" opening.  Fold the seam allowance down and pin the seam closed.

Slip stitch the opening closed by hand.  This makes a nearly invisible closing for the scarf.

The second scarf is done the same way except I increased the width of the panel to 19" for a bit more width to the finished scarf.

I hate that I don't have anyone available to model these terrific scarves!

Sew an Infinity Scarf or a Circle Scarf in Minutes.

Shimmering Robin Egg Blue Scarf Made in Minutes.
You see them everywhere and on young and old these days.  They call them Infinity or Circle Scarves.  I was looking at the dimensions and thinking, "How hard can this be?"  and we all know I am queen of fabrics these days!

They looked to be in a range of 60-64" by 8-14" and I thought I could probably make this happen.

Then the phone rang and we were invited to a friends birthday party.  A gift?  An opportunity.  The birthday girl has often been seen with lots of scarves and bejeweled.  So after I finished with the Apple turnovers and Apple Butter this morning I got busy.

1/3 yard (12") Shimmering Knit Fabric 60"+ wide
matching thread
pins
iron

Press the fabric.  Pin together the two long edges right sides facing each other but mark the fabric so as to leave about 4" on both ends open and not sewn.   Sew a 7/8" seam and back stitch.  Remove the pins and turn the scarf right side out as you would turn a sock.

Next pin the two short edges together with the right sides facing each other.  Sew all of the way across making a 7/8 " seam.  Turn the scarf.

Next pin the opening along the seam line and hand stitch shut.  This made a nice invisible seam.

Hooray!  It is beautiful and she said she loved it!  I got  a picture of her modeling it at the party.  I can just see her in a black or grey turtleneck with this scarf, her blue eyes will POP.   And what a nice party it was!  Thanks for the invite Mike and Mindy.
