Yes, I am struggling with the winter "BLAHS" and You?

My winter garden!
Gosh today I dawned my hooded coat, gloves, and heavy socks and shoes to head out to the mailbox at the end of the drive.  Not so far at all.......But, after carefully picking my way over the ice covered snow, grabbing onto Brian's truck just to be sure not to fall!  I turned around and came back at the edge of the lawn as I could see the street (on a good sized long hill) was a shining sheet of ice!  NO WAY am I stepping out there to gather our arm full of junk mail and catalogs!

Especially after the horrors we have faced since the week before Thanksgiving!  Our beloved brother-in-law passed after a 4 month unexpected illness, Grandma fell and is now in the nursing home, and Mother fell and is still in a cast with a broken wrist.  Eek!

Now with long, cold, dreary days I find myself working hard, hard, hard not to fall into the trap of negative thinking.  It is a well laid trap meant to snare each and everyone of us.

My mind does not naturally find the gratitude in my attitude.  Rather it is a discipline I have been working on for at least the last 30 years! Yes, indeed a discipline I have found, learned, and endeavor to practice every day of my life.  Admittedly some periods are much more difficult than others!

When spring arrives it is oh so easy to be positive and grateful with the blossoming of the world!

But now, just before spring arrives the days seem such a struggle!  But then.....I look around and see I am so very blessed by God with home, family, friends, and country.  And I am jerked back to the awareness of the depth of the debt I owe for all I am and all I have.

I remember each morning with the reading of my devotions, and I remember each day as I see the depth of the strength of my sisters and brother, the kindness of my dearest friend, the love of my family and I remember each day the words of Psalm 37:8  Do not fret, it leads only to evil.

Then I start anew with a better out look.  I start the day with a renewed attitude of gratitude.

Prayers for Healing, a Surprise Box, and an Unplanned Trip Started this Week!

There are more than a dozen, some quite old and dogeared cookbooks in this unforeseen gift box.
Brian came home Monday evening with his arms full carrying a big box and another bag along side!  He had stopped on the way home from work to speak with a fellow craftsman, John Wirthwein, whose specialty is wood and the refinishing of gun stocks.  Barb, John's wife sent me an unanticipated surprise, a box brimming over with old cookbooks.  Plus a big bag of apples and navel oranges their daughter had sent that was more than they could use.  What a thoughtful and appreciated surprise.  I hurried to the phone to call and thank her.

It will be great fun to thumb through these books and find their treasures to share.  Today is the last day with a forecast of warm (45 degree F) weather.  The days that follow are to be much colder with the promise of snow so I look foreword to "cozying" up with a "new" book!  Of course we will enjoy the fresh fruit too!

Grandma Powell
After we settled back down our middle son Mike called and invited me to join him on a road trip to visit his 94 year old Grandmother who is ailing and in recovery south of Indianapolis.  So next morning at 7:30 AM he dropped by for me and we were off!

It turned out to be a sunny and crisp day and not all that chilly.  We found her very happy to see us and enjoyed a visit of several hours.

She said she was just thinking how she wished she could speak with us and in we both walked.  She had the letter I had written her last week and was delighted I had written.  I promised to continue writing although I am not sure I carry much in the way of news!  Our oldest son also visits her weekly as do cousins who live in close proximity.

I always enjoy watching for hawks on the drive north and we spotted several both coming and going.
We arrived home before supper time and had a really nice day!

Mother
My 86 year old Mother is ailing too with a broken wrist she got when she fell on the ice three weeks ago Monday.   I got to see her the first weekend of this month.  My blessed sisters and brother are looking after her as she heals.  She has visiting nurses, therapy, and several more watching over her as she told me today and is doing well.  One of my sisters is taking her to a doctor appointment today.  She is blessed and fortunate so many live so close! They remain in my prayers.

 MY PRAYER:

We know that You, the God of hope, have filled us with all joy and peace in believing, so our families abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.  You are our God through all of our lifetime, yes, even when our hair is white with age.  You made us and you are taking care of us.  You carry us along and are our Savior. You have given us added years of life, as rich and full as those of many generations, all packed into one.  We have asked for healing for our beloved family members, so we believe we have received it and the healing is now ours. Holy, Holy, Holy are You Lord of hosts:  the whole earth is full of Your Glory.  Thy will be done in Jesus Holy name. A-men

Jeff Sisson our beloved brother-in-law has passed to the next great adventure with our Lord Jesus.

I have no words. Only the Lord's Prayer,  the 23rd Psalm, and Amazing Grace give me solace.  We all mourn the passing a of an exceptionally good man man.

I will thank God every day I am able to do what I do. Gingersnaps, Banana Bread, Ribs, & Slaw

Every fall I always make Gingersnaps and this is my mot favorite recipe!
This 1-2-3 banana bread is as easy as it gets!
Yes, I was feeling all toasty and made my banana bread     thehiddenpantry.blogspot.com/2014/10/1-2-3-banana-bread.html and baked ginger snap cookies yesterday.      thehiddenpantry.blogspot.com/2011/12/gingersnaps.html

Mmmmm!  Need I say more?
That feeling continued today as I heard Brian out doors with the big leaf blower going! But then as I cleaned up my mess from having put BBQ ribs in to slow cook    thehiddenpantry.blogspot.com/2012/08/slow-cooker-country-back-ribs-with-just.html
and shredded cabbage for Cole slaw I heard my cell phone and it was a weather alert!  Winter Storm warning. NO, I am not ready for this! Not yet!

Oh gees!  The days have already been so grey.  That is bad enough but for the early cold and now snow before Thanksgiving.  Uncommon her but not unheard of.  And then all of the illness and hard times that have befallen those I love.

So much for my pity party.  Get on with it and rejoice in so many things! Not in any particular order.

1. I live in the USA.  While I strongly disagree with the direction things are currently headed we still are a wonderful nation and have been so very blessed.  I will remember to thank God every day for this and for those who guard and protect us all.

2.  My wonderful husband and family.  I will thank God every day for every one of them.

3.  Clean air and water.  I will thank God every day for this.

4. Food and our home and Molly.  I will thank God every day for this.

5. Prayer.  I will speak with God every day through this.

Psalm 71:18  Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.   (KJV)

The Flowers and the Garden Today Remind Me of the Beauty and Bouny We Are Blessed with.

This is the first thing I see when leaving my front door.
There are a lot of worries in our world today.  One has to but turn on the news!  War, illness, scandal, porous borders, it seems much more chaotic than I can ever remember in the past.  On a personal note there is serious illness in our family on several fronts and lets face it the economy is not roaring either.  So I take comfort in the simple blessing of nature today as well as a scripture verse I may share later. God Bless America and help her along her way.

These Dragon Leaf Begonias are the second thing I see.  I love them!
Nature reminds me to pause and just enjoy the minute I am seeing and sensing it's beauty.  Here are some photos I took this morning of the flag and the flowers that happen to be blooming.

This is what I see on my path to our little vegetable patch.   I sure felt better after stopping and really looking at them!  I hope you have enjoyed them too.

Little Lemon Pies Brighten a Snowy Day and a Verse for Today

Little Lemon Meringue Pies.
As I watched the snow coming down this morning with the deep grey clouds and the little birds hanging onto the branches before their flight and approach to the feeders I thought it a good day to make up little lemon pies.  Something bright, yellow, and sunny!

There are four disks of pie pastry made up and frozen in the upstairs freezer and  small glass jars of egg whites I have previously frozen so I took some out to thaw.  Here is the link to click on for the pie crust and meringue recipes.    thehiddenpantry.blogspot.com/2014/01/cooking-chow-mein-and-chocolate-pie.html

Roll dock and bake the pie crusts using either a 9" pie plate or 3-4 small individual pie pans as directed in the link above.  If making the small pies I bakes 20-25 minutes.  Remove from the oven and set aside to cool a bit.  Prepare the meringue as indicated above and set aside.

Meanwhile I made up lemon filling for the pies.

Ingredients for Lemon Pie Filling:

1 1/2 C. sugar
1/3 C. + 1 T. cornstarch
3 large egg yolks slightly beaten
1 1/2 C. water
3 T. butter
2 t. fresh grated lemon jest
1/2 C. fresh squeezed lemon juice

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Stir the sugar with the corn starch in a medium saucepan.    Blend the egg yolks and water and gradually add them to the sugar mixture stirring as you do.    Cook over medium heat, stirring until it thickens and comes to a boil. Boil and stir another minute.  Remove the filling from the heat and stir in the butter, lemon zest, and lemon juice.  Immediately pour into the baked pie shells.

Top with the meringue sealing the edges and bake about 7-9 minutes until the meringue is golden brown.  Cool and refrigerate until serving time.  Yield 3-4 small pies or 6 slices of a 9" pie.

Today I am sharing a Bible verse that I particularly like.  With all that goes on in the world today I have to remind myself about this more often than I would like to admit.  Luke 6:37 THE BOOK  Never criticize or condemn or it will come back on you.  Go easy on others; then they will do the same for you.

I hope your days are bright and sunny as Lemon Pie.

"Getting Old Is Not for Sissy's", and A Prayer of Thanksgiving.

Brian's Dad, had a favorite saying since the first time that I met him, Getting old is not for sissy's." he would say with a twinkle in his eye!  So, when very good things come our way as we get older I feel so very Blessed and I think of Paul.

Yes, there have been 2 little miracles at our house in recent days.  The first was the discovery of Dr. Mike Boyd.  He is a knee and hip surgeon in Evansville, Ind. that my friend and Chiropractor Dr. Jane Hormouth recommended.  I visited him on Tuesday June 4th fully expecting a recommendation of a knee replacement.  After two thorough examinations and a full explanation with options I received injections in both knees and have had no pain since then.

It was quite stunning to wake up at 2:00 A.M. on Wednesday morning June 5th to go to the bathroom and jump out of bed like I was 30 years old!!  To Sashay down the hall like a spring chicken, to hop up from the commode like a bunny, and to do so without event a hint of pain.  I fly up and down the stairs almost.  Well, I have to admit by the end of the day when I am a bit tired I don't exactly fly....but first thing in the morning look out!

This is projected to last for 3-6 months when I call and go back for a "do-again".  I can only pray it works out as thought!

The second is a nice surprise we got upon learning the VA was recommending a hearing aid for Brian.  (His hearing loss is not extreme but of the higher level tones.)  Was that the hearing aid came in, was fitted Monday, and really does actually work and work well!  My Dad's did not after having spent thousands of dollars,  Grandma Powell complains of problems with hers all of the time.  Uncle Gene has not had success either.

So thinking about it I don't think we have ever known of a soul who had success with their hearing aid.  Not until this week anyway.  The process started a few months ago with a referral by the VA and the appliance after being selected and fitted was worn all day Monday and every day since with out a single problem.  Brian can talk on the phone without it's buzzing, a common complaint.  It is almost weightless and does not so far bother him to wear.

When he came home with it I could not even see the thing!!  I really had to specifically look rather intently to find it.  This model sits behind his ear and has the tiniest clear soft tube, well almost a wire,  come down into the ear canal.   So there go the "didn't hear you excuses!"  The TV is turned lower and I will have to speak more softly after having had to turn up my volume to be heard.  It has been a good week.

I offer a prayer of thanksgiving:
Heavenly Father we thank You for this day and the may blessing You have bestowed upon us.  We thank You especially because as You have told us in Philip, chapter 4, verse 6.  Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God.  We are grateful that God has heard and answered-all is in His hands.  In Jesus name we pray. A-men.

Musings & a Prayer in the Seven Hundreth Post on the Third Anniversary of The Hidden Pantry.

April 19, 2010 was the first posting of the Hidden Pantry, done with my beautiful Granddaughter Emily and I both snuggled up in front of this computer.  She was 14 and I was 62.  I didn't have a clue as she plunked away. Flipping through pages and asking me questions as she filled in the blanks for me.   Along we went, happily as we always are.  My grandchildren give me such great joy.  We had made a dish she had called and wanted to cook for our Sunday dinner and it became our first post.  No picture of that first one as we had no plan.

Mostly we did it for our other family members who always like to share recipes and my daughters-in-law who had wanted me to write a cook book.  Who knew that 3 years later we would have had well over a million visitors and made so many lovely, what I now consider friends?

I have pondered over the past 10 days how to mark this anniversary and to be honest haven't really had any bright ideas.  But, looking at the events in these United States this week and the horror of the calamities as they have unfolded. I do not despair.  I look to me instead.  What can just me do?

No, instead, I hug my children and grandchildren a little closer.  I kissed my husband a bit more tenderly as he left this morning and I  ponder this.

What if someone I love was so horribly taken from me in an unforeseen way?  Would the hurts be important?  You know what I mean.....like that my husband is so very much a messy pack rat of sorts?  A constant irritant.  I gave it up awhile back, must have been that day older and wiser started.

Well anyway,  I realized what a void it would leave if I didn't have to chase down the things he loses. To vacuum behind him as he tracks in.  To put back all the things he sets out and leaves.  Now I am just glad I can do these things.  I have a lot of friends who would give anything in the world to have back someone they love and have lost.  They would love to have that person with every single fault back. for even a day.  I count my blessings.

I started being sure I made the coffee every night ahead of his doing it,  just to have done it for him because I can.  I quit looking at it that he can be a pain in the "keester" because he always does this or that......instead I think of how much I would probably miss the very things that drive me nuts most of all were he not here with me.  Then I thought of the irritations others impart to my soul and eventually decided that it was all my problem.. I am obviously irritable and choose to get irritated.

So now I look for things, little things I can do for him and anyone else I can.  Now, I am in no way a saint and am not preaching,  I am saying I am trying and it makes me and my life better.

Since I have taken it upon myself,  now "I" can fix it.  "I" chose not to be irritable and get affected by all that little and even sometimes big stuff.  I choose to believe that better days are ahead.

So my message is this,  do not choose to live with strife,  to be angry, and irritated.  Let it go.  Life is just too short and far too precious to mess it all up.  When something needs fixed look first to yourself.  Perhaps more marriages would last longer, more children and their parents would find common ground,  and happiness would be less rare if we were all a bit more honest with ourselves.  Perhaps if we find honor in doing things for others instead of being "put upon" and being consumed with "what's in it for me"  it would spread.  You know sort of like playing it forward.

The Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi sits in the window above my desk.
I pray for all those who are suffering...who have lost children and loved ones, who suffer in anyway.  I pray for anyone who is hungry, or ill, or in pain of any sort.  I pray that our country may heal and that our planet will continue to heal its self and to sustain us.  I give thanks for all our many blessings.

And I am grateful for all of you too, who stop by and share a few minutes with me on this little blog.  Thank you all.    Diane

Niece LEXI, 13 years old, bakes and decorates beautiful cupcakes!

I love the variety of the decorations and the creativity she shows.  The 85 is in honor of my Mother's birthday.
Our niece Lexi, My sister Linda's oldest daughter's oldest girl......what a mouthful that was......baked up and decorated these beautiful cupcakes this weekend.  I just could not resist sharing this photo!

The cupcakes were served at the waiting room of the hospital where my sister Sheree's youngest son Jacob is receiving treatment.  Jacob had been admitted because of a recent seizure that resulted from an automobile accident a little over a year ago but he is making progress everyday.  We pray without ceasing for Jacob and his family and trusting in our Lord for his restoration.

Mark 11:24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it and it will be yours.

We believe for Jacob.

Poem and Thoughts from Charlie Reese's Final Column for the Orlando Sentinel. It is a Completely Neutral Statement Addressing the Source of our Debt.

by Charley Reese

Charlie is retiring after 49 years as a journalist.  This is his final column from the Orlando Sentinel and is politically neutral.

545 vs. 300,000,000 People
-by Charlie Reese

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don't propose a federal budget.  The President does.

You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations.  The House of Representatives does.

You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one President, and nine Supreme Court justices equate to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress.  In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason.  They have no legal authority.  They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a President to do one cotton-picking thing.  I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash.  The politician has the power to accept or to reject it.  No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault.  They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall.  No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the president for creating deficits.  The President can only propose a budget.  He cannot force the Congress to accept it.

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving  appropriations and taxes.  Who is the speaker of the House?  John Boenner.  He is the leader of the majority party.  He and fellow House members, not the President, can approve any budget they want.  If the President vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted--by present facts--of incompetence and irresponsibility.  I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people.  When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red it is because they want it in the red.

If the Army and the Marines are in Iraq and Afghanistan it's because they want them in Iraq and Afghanistan....

If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish;  to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject;  to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power.

Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like  "the economy,"  "inflation,"  or "politics"  that prevent them from doing what they took an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power.

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.

Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees.

We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

Tax his land,
Tax his bed,
Tax the table,
At which he's fed.

Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes
Are the rule.

Tax his work,
Tax his play,
He works for

Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.

Tries to think.

Tax his cigars,
Tax his beers,
If he cries
Tax his tears.

Tax his car,
Tax his gas,
Find other ways
To tax his ass.

Tax all he has,
Then let him know
That you won't be done
Till he has no dough.

When he screams and hollers;
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till
He's good and sore.

Then tax his coffin,
Tax his grave, Tax the sod in
Which he's laid.....

Put these words
Upon his tomb,
'Taxes drove me
to my doom......'

Do not relax,
It's time to apply

STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY?

Not one of these taxes existed 100 year ago & our nation was the most prosperous in the world.  We had absolutely no national debt,  had the largest middle class in the world,  and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

WHAT IN THE HECK HAPPENED?  CAN YOU SPELL  'P O L I T I C I A N S ?'

I am reprinting this email from a dear friend because I see it as a reality check.  I am wondering if there are enough Americans with enough GUMPTION to help and correct what we have allowed to happen?  If you are one of them please email this on to others by using the M button at the end of this posting.  Like on Google + or on Facebook.  Drop me a comment and tell me what you think.

Prayer for our Country and our People for Election Day.

I have been a little concerned about the election.  I have just a bit of apprehension over the degree of trepidation I feel coming through when listening to some of the folks on television and on the radio.

Given all of the  disasters and perils we currently face and the height that emotions are running my fear is that regardless of who finally wins the current election there may be enough unrest to insight bad judgement and poor behavior on the part of some.

I am powerless except to pray and so I offer this prayer of unity lest some forget we ARE ONE PEOPLE.

Psalm 107:26-29 KJV
They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths:  their soul is melted because of trouble.  They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits end.  Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.  He maketh the storm calm, so that the waves thereof are still.

Our Father, who is in Heaven, we thank You for the Blessings of our forefathers who brought forth this great nation.  We pray for Your love and mercy upon all of our people this coming election day that You will guide us with a sense of purpose, unity, and peace as we make our ways to the voting booths through the highways and byways.

Father we ask that angels will deliver us all safely and that You Lord will perfect that which concerns us.  Your mercy, Oh Lord endures forever,  forsake not the works of Your own hands.  Lord we trust in You alone and enemies and negative aspects do not defeat us.  You rescue us because You always do right.

We thank You for cutting off the strength of those who would do harm or hurt and increase the power of all good men in their place.  We thank You for raising up godly men and women to govern over us.  We pray that our President, whomever may be elected, lives close to You forever Lord.  We believe You have sent out Your loving kindness and  truth to guard and watch over our elected officials.  May our President live long.  I will pray for him and bless him.  Thank You for helping our President judge as You would,

My soul finds rest in You alone, Lord, for You alone are my hope.  Not my will but Thine be done, in Jesus Holy name we pray.   A-men.

Election Prayer Fall 2012

Election Prayer Fall 2012
Our Father we thank and praise You this day for Your Blessings and Grace as we walk in this world.  We praise You for the gifts of family, country, and freedom as we enjoy the bounty of our great nation.  We thank You for the guidance and protection you have afforded us and ask for Your continued Blessings.  We ask Your forgiveness for our mistakes.  We ask You to strengthen our faith.

You taught us in Mark11:23 that what we say and continue to say comes to pass and our faith grows as we hear ourselves say it.  So Father I pray to you for intervention into the hearts and minds, and mouths of those who set about to divide us.  I ask that the tongues that wag division, envy, greed, anxiousness, and unrest be quieted.  That those who manifest strife be stilled.

Holy Father I ask that You guide our nation in the last days of the current election process and reveal the hearts of those who seek to call things as they are.  I ask that truth be revealed that our citizens might see truth and justice and our country be Blessed with peace, economic recovery, and prosperity.  I pray for our many service personnel in so many nations and at home that they might be protected and Blessed.  Be with the families of those who have lost their loved ones in the current strife and grant them comfort and healing for their great sacrifice,

We ask You to and thank You for cutting off the strength of evil leaders and increasing the power of good men in their place, where ever they may be, as you tell us in Psalm 75:10.  We thank You for raising up godly men and women to govern us, as You say in Psalm 75:6-7.

Thank You Lord that we can choose to live as in 1 Thes. 4:11-12, a quiet life, minding our own business and doing our own work, so people can trust and respect us.  Give us the vision to also see and appreciate this in others.

Father I ask for unity as You tell us in Philip 2:1.  That we are brothers in You, Lord, sharing the same Spirit.  That our heats are tender, and sympathetic to each other.  That we love each other, agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, working together with one heart and mind and purpose.

We ask these things in Jesus Holy name, not my will but Thine be done.  A-men

Prayer for Jacob

Jacob at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Ga.
Our Father I offer today a prayer of intercession for Jacob.  He is raging this morning since 8:30 AM.  He has been returned to ICU.  Please cast Your Heavenly Blessings upon him this day.  I ask that You end his turmoil and suffering and raise him up and out of this affliction.  I know it is but Your thought or glance that can heal him in a moment and I ask for this giving You all of the Glory, Praise, and Thanksgiving for your wonders.  I stand with many in this request and we thank you too for all of them.

We believe You when You tell us we are the head and not the tail.  We believe for this healing.  We believe that Jacob will be healed and his family returned home.  All praise and thanks be to You in heaven and here on Earth.  In Jesus name we pray, not my will but Thine be done.  A-men

Note: Jacob Bolling is a senior at Hamilton Southeastern High School in Hamilton County in Indiana and an Eagle Scout.  He was injured in a one car accident during a severe thunderstorm on his way to school when his vehicle hydroplaned and hit a tree.  He is the youngest son of my sister Sheree Bolling and her husband Baxter.  He is currently a patient at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Ga.

Thank you for your prayers.

Sewing up a Patriotic Pillow Today to Mark the 2 yr. Anniversary of this Little Blog!!

Today is a little milestone for me.  It marks the 2 year anniversary of this little blog.  It has given me great pleasure to get to know so many of you.  I have loved the wonderful comments and appreciated every single person who has bothered to take a peek at thehiddenpantry.blogspot.com.  There is a very special place in my heart for all of you who follow this blog and I really have become more thoughtful about this than I ever anticipated when it was started.

I didn't know how to mark today and so I asked my sister Linda, my next door neighbor Doris, and my best and dearest friend Diane for suggestions.  We kicked around a few things as women will do and patriotism seemed to be the winning topic.  I suspect with all of the troubles in this world, the upcoming election, and the disastrous state of the current economy it makes sense  to stop and examine our loyalty and perspective.

Websters Dictionary tells us a patriot is one who loves and defends his country.

Doris had made a lovely little "prayer" pillow about 4" x 4" to commemorate the tragedy of 9/11.  I was inspired to piece together a patchwork pillow top centering around the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and remembered I had saved some fabric with the pledge written across it.

Since this pledge was to be the center of the pillow I looked for additional scraps to piece the squares and came up with enough red, white. and blue to put one together.  I would like to tell you I measured and calculated but that would be a lie.  I just stacked up the colors I was going to use on the cutting board and placed the fabric with the pledge on top,  pulled out the straight edge rule I use as a cutting guide and cut a stack of rectangles.

Next I monkeyed around with them until I found a pattern I liked.  Meanwhile I got out the ironing board and steam iron and cranked them up.  All systems are go now!  I cannot sew without a hot iron and the ironing board.  Call me crazy but dear old Ruth Sproat who was my Home Economics teacher and 4-H leader all those many years ago taught us right.  At least for the time.  I don't have a clue what they teach now.  Well anyway I am totally neurotic about pressing seams open, trimming seams, trimming threads as I go, and back-stitching.  As you can see I pressed everything and I trim as I go.

After joining the sides of the blocks and pressing them I had 3 rows of blocks to join and the top was complete.

Next I embellished with a bit of eyelet ruffle by basting it right side facing down onto the right side of the pillow top with the raw edges together.  I sewed about 1/8" from the raw edge,  Next I pinned on the back side of the pillow right sides together matching the corners and edges and sewed right inside the line of baste stitching  leaving a 7" opening in the center of one side.  Be sure you don't leave a corner open as you will create problems for yourself that way.  Be sure to back-stitch both sides of the opening as it will have to endure the stress of your hand stuffing in the pillow form or batting, whichever you may choose.

Turn the pillow right side out and push open the corners.  Stuff your pillow with your choice of fillers.  Pin the opening together turning the right sides under.  Hand stitch the opening closed and you are finished with the pillow.

I want to also thank all who serve now or have in the past served this country,  I thank their families for their sacrifice.

I encourage each and every citizen to get out and vote in the upcoming primaries and the general election.  Many have passed before us and much blood was shed and sacrifice made that we may do so.  God Bless America.
